“Lover” is a fictional dramatization of a story very rarely told: of the loss endured by partners of gay servicemembers who are killed in battle.
The video features Tom Goss as the bereaved partner of an army soldier (actor Ben Horen) killed while on duty in Afghanistan.
Among those playing medics who come to the aid of the wounded soldier are several former servicemembers who were discharged under the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy: Mike Almy, David Hall, and Danny Hernandez, all of whom are active members of SLDN. Keith Bryant stars as a fellow soldier. Tom Goss’s music is availabe to preview and purchase on his website. Check it out.
In Feburary, when Matt Alber and I sat down to pen an anthem about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell I never would have realized then how deeply DADT would impact me.
For months I heard stories from servicemembers and their partners about the reality of military life, deployment, war and being left behind. However, when I turned on the news these stories were continually boiled down to a political discussion of numbers, forgetting that it’s people (and their loved ones) that lie behind the numbers.

Abandoned by his father and raised by his single mother, Debbie, Nate Merritt joins the Marines to support his soon-to-be fiancée, Trish. While on leave in Palm Springs he meets Andy, a magnetic, seemingly free-spirited young gay man with dreams of escaping to the glitz and glamour of Read more…
This is a powerful scene between 2 military men as one of them is undergoing a life threatening surgery. There is so much tension between them as the father and nurse are right there. When you see all the emotion, you can’t help but feel sad when love can be so hard to express.

President Obama gives an emotional speech then signs repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” into law on 12/22/2010. This is the live broadcast of the signing ceremony. It includes the excited welcome and thank yous, the introductory remarks, signing of the bill with 15 different pens, and commentary by host Chris Matthews and his studio guests. This is 28 minutes long, but it gives you a full experience of seeing this historic legislation. Video from MSNBC.
Rachel also talks with Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) about General Amos’s warning on DADT repeal: “Mistakes and inattention or distractions cost Marines lives. That’s the currency of this fight…I don’t want to lose any Marines to the distraction. I don’t want to have any Marines that I’m visiting at Bethesda with no legs be the result of any type of distraction.”
During the second day of hearings (12/2/10), the Service Chiefs disagreed on whether to proceed with immediate repeal during a time of war, but all concurred their respective branches could implement repeal and that Congress should act to prevent the court from ordering the military to lift the ban without a proper implementation process. The Service Chiefs also hinted that they could support eventual repeal and said they trusted Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to consider their views before ordering the Armed Forces to lift the ban.
The straight facts on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law and the current legislative language that would repeal it:
» Approximately 14,000 men and women have been abruptly fired because of DADT since 1993. Tens of thousands more have voluntarily left the military because of the unnecessary burden of serving under DADT.
» The DADT policy violates the core values of every branch of the U.S. military.
» Congress should act to repeal the DADT law immediately. The Defense Department will create a plan to successfully manage the implementation of the new policy.
» The DADT repeal amendment to NDAA is completely respectful of the study and process set up by the Pentagon to address implementation issues.
» The American people overwhelmingly want the DADT law repealed. A majority of conservatives, Republicans, Independents, weekly church-goers, and even Tea Partiers also support the repeal of the DADT law.
» At least 3 Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and 3 Secretaries of Defense now support repeal of the DADT law.
The irony of a convicted felon who lied about diverting proceeds from arms sales to a rebel group in Nicaragua supporting a policy that forces gay and lesbian servicemen to lie about their sexual orientation was lost on both Hannity and North.
